Authenticity and the Unbecoming

So often the word authenticity is shared in a way that resembles genuineness or sincerity, and in the context of personality or behaviour. With this meaning in mind, we are guided to reject pretense and falsity. But how does one know what is authentic when exploring the self, on the journey of self-awareness? And how can the evolutionary path be truly understood unless through the gradual moments of liberation which lead to authenticity? To answer simply, it cannot, and this is all a matter of perspective.

From birth we are guided through an upbringing sometimes resembling others, and sometimes not. We will all have different experiences, and varying degrees of loving support from parents and peers. Some will learn there is a need for a role within family, such as protector, others will learn the only person ever to be relied upon is oneself. So, amongst this behavioural conditioning and differing factors we find ourselves at some time in our lives reflecting, often during important time periods across the life span, including age milestones, when becoming a parent, following relationship breakdown, and so on.

Self-awareness through reflection is often guided through yogic teachings and meditation. Observing thoughts, behaviours, and reactions within oneself is THE most powerful tool for personal transformation. And like any discipline, it is to be mastered. Not one person on this planet can expect to develop in a healthy way on their life journey without maintaining this skill, and once the self has been explored, then there are others, and the interaction between the self and others; and this can feel complex and sometimes daunting. But if we remember that ultimately each one of us, in some way, is on the path to learning authenticity, we will have developed not only a greater sense of compassion for ourselves, but also for others and how we see all in the world. This is not easy.

Ultimately, the true self or Atman is the eternal self, one which is of pure consciousness and everlasting. We can all begin the journey to remembering our eternal self through practicing self-reflection and authenticity. Begin today with honesty (Satya), and compassion/ non-hurting (Ahimsa). Meditate on these two words daily, try to think of them when interacting with others, and remember that HOPE is the greatest facilitator of genuine interaction/ authenticity, as well as personal healing.
